Sheriff Derrick Van Hess
Before he was a sheriff Derick Van Hess was a third generation frontiersman and brahmin rancher. Growing up he was part of a loose collection of Ranchers in a wide Area that maintained complete community cooperation, Police, Fire and Caravan business was performed strictly on a volunteer basis with major decisions left for Community Debate. Not an actual government as much as independent ranchers with a pact to work together and defend against outside threats, personal disputes often being resolved Personally, and occasionally violently. Hess' Grandpa had recovered before settling down a Vast compendium of books. Young Derrick was left the books and a Colt Python.
History became his favorite subject, in youth he wanted an answer as to why the old world escalated into complete destruction. His personal thesis settled on the fact that organization of government quickly built to many focusing on “the common good” which would eventually be changed once a leader would Take charge and manipulate The system To his own ends. History of the world displayed this outcome happening far Too often to discredit. He made a personal honor code, unbreakable, universal laws that would be agreed as good/evil. With a hatred of any compromise his world became all black and white.
His neighbors found him unflexible difficult To associate with, but appreciated his skill with prowess and extensive knowledge for strategy and combat (another subject he studied extensively due to his fascination with histor). Eventually civilization caught up with him as the NCR's expansion reached his Ranch. Under certain situations he could appreciate NCR goals but found there methods to oppose his moral code. More than that NCR did not allow citizens to carry weapons in town, and Derrick's personal experience had often showed when one side keeps weapons and another is disarmed the Result is often that the democracy set out is a farce.
Derrick Hess took the inspiration of another story “Lonesome Dove” to gather all of his reources to move his operation to greener pastures away from any particular faction rule. In his Travels he would meet Various other individuals Such as Ludiya, a former Enclave member also disillusioned by the actions of her government. Or Malachai a religious Ghoul, charitabley assisting wherever he can. Hess became the Defender of the disenfranchised and underdogs, a symbol for those who Wanted a fresh start.
The discovery of a truck yard provided him with the needed resources to build Pallet Town around a still operating Radio broadcast station. People looked up to Hess enough and asked him to be mayor of the new town, he adamantly refused. He did accept The Role of Sheriff only for the sake of preventing anyone else destroying what he helped to create and to watch over the citizens he swore to protect before there was even a town to call home.
Derrick Van Hess will be a man of few words, he will not say a sentence of ten words if it can be said with four. His Moral Code is strict but Simple, he will not waste efforts on minor infractions if it poses No threat. He is keen on spotting situations that can escalate to acts of violence, and will take action to prevent wrong from happening. He never fires warning shots, if his pistol is drawn he will fire at someone.
